snakes on top forming a figure of eight called
a caduceus. Text around PONTIF TRP COS III.
History:
The caduceus was attributed to the Roman God
Mercury. Prudence is generally supposed to
be represented by these two serpents, and
the wings are the symbols of diligence, both
needful qualities in the pursuit of trade
and commerce, which Mercury patronised.
