Denarius of Galba
Denarius of Galba
Denarius of Galba
Roman Coin Emperor E to L
£3.50

Obverse: Laureate head of Galba, facing right. Text around IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG.

Reverse: Livia in long robe standing left, holding patera and vertical sceptre. Text around DIVA AVGVSTA.

History: General discontent over Nero's rule flared into open revolt in Gaul, and though it was put down, Galba's troops proclaimed him Augustus. The Senate agreed, Nero committed suicide, and Galba was Emperor - but no for long. He was as stingy as he was wealthy, and alienated those who expected bribes and largesse, in particular the Praetorian Guard, who conspired with Otho, and beheaded Galba and his chosen successor in the Forum.

Date: Struck November 68 AD to January 69 AD

Diameter: 1.8cm
