History:
In 44BC Marcus Brutus conspired against Julius
Caesar and was one of his assassins. In 42BC
Brutus and Gaius Cassius lost the final battle
in the Wars of the Second Triumvirate in Macedonia
against the forces of Marc Antony and Octavian.
Lucius Sestius (L SESTI) served as proquaestor
to Brutus in Macedonia, and it was during
this proquaestorship that he struck coins.
The reverse of this coin refers to the office
of pontifex, to which Brutus had been elected.
Sestius, was pardoned by Octavian after the
downfall of Brutus, and was made consul suffectus
in 23 BC.
