History: Servius Sulpicius Galba was 72 years old when he was saluted emperor immediately after Nero's demise in June AD 68. Galba proved to be an ineffective emperor. First, the Praetorian Guard (his body guards) were irritated because Galba failed to reward them for proclaiming him emperor. Second, he named Piso his successor who had no military experience, angering the Praetorian, and this offended Otho, who expected to succeed Galba. Otho lead a revote within the Praetorian Guard against Galba, whom they murdered in January AD 69.
